Gemi şubesinin zaman içinde gerek araştırma gerekse eğitim kapasitesi bakımından bir fakülte yeterliliğine ulaştığına düşünen şube akademik kadrosunun başvurusu neticesinde, bir Gemi İnşaatı Fakültesinin kurulması İTÜ senatosunun 13 Mart 1969 tarihli toplantısında uygun görüldü ve 18 Aralık 1969 tarihinde fakülte kuruluş işlemleri sonuçlandırıldı. Fakültenin ismi 1979 yılında Gemi İnşaatı ve Deniz Bilimleri Fakültesi olarak değiştirildi.
