The Waterway presented by Emperor William II was a gift to Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1898 to commemorate the German-Ottoman friendship.
This Waterway is located in Sultanahmet Square opposite the tomb of Sultan Ahmed I, which was built in commemoration of the second visit of the German Emperor William II to Istanbul.
The Waterway plan was developed by the architect Spita and was supervised by architect Shula, Kalitzik and Joseph Anthony. It was built in the Neuronsian style with an octagonal plan and its parts were prepared in Germany and then placed in Sultanahmet Square. The dome of the Waterway was placed on eight columns of green of the stone and was painted inside the dome with mosaics and covered with golden mosaics. And placed on the edges of the dome 8 medals. The medals were engraved on the seal of Sultan Abdul Hamid II and signed by Emperor William II. It was opened on the birthday of Emperor William II on November 27, 1901. The two presidents attended the opening ceremony. It was customary in Ottoman times to distribute sweet drinks to the people from the way in religious holidays.
