Stages of the educational system
Nursery stage
Pre-school education is optional at this stage until the age of six, which includes the age group (3-5 years).
Primary stage
Primary education includes the age group (6-14 years). Education in primary education in Turkey is compulsory for all citizens without exception. The duration of study in the primary stage is 8 years (5 elementary years and 3 preparatory years) and is free for all citizens in public schools.
Secondary level
Secondary education includes the age group (15-18) years. The duration of study at the secondary level is 4 years and free for all citizens in public schools, whether public, vocational or technical. In some schools there may be an additional year of language study.
Higher education
After completing high school, students can enroll in institutes and universities for higher education. The duration of study in Turkish universities is 4 years, or two years in high professional institutes. In some universities there is an additional year of language learning. Under normal conditions, the duration of the master's degree is two years, and the PhD from 3 to 5 years. This category includes all educational establishments that offer postgraduate studies and are supervised by the Higher Education Council.
