Ayazma Mosque

The Ayazma Mosque is located between the Salacak district and the Şemaipaşa district within the Üsküdar region in the Asian section of Istanbul.

In 1761, during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III and by the architect Mohammed Tahir Agha, the Ayazma Mosque was built on a high plateau overlooking the city of Istanbul.

The mosque is distinguished by its distinctive architecture. Historical documents have been used to build the Western-style mosque, which is in opposition to the Ottoman style of the dome and the large minarets. The architecture of the Ayazma Mosque is characterized by diversity and harmony between Western architectural forms and classical Ottoman architectural forms.

The main section of the mosque is planned in the form of a square covered with four bridges. The mihrab, the minbar and the seat of the khateeb are decorated with colored stones. The ceiling is topped by a dome decorated with vegetal inscriptions. The names of the prominent caliphs Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan and Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them) were also engraved on four sides.

The mihrab was built of red-painted marble. A number of inscriptions were also planned on the door of the mosque and on the windows. The inscriptions on the door of the mosque were engraved by the famous calligrapher Abdullah, either on the windows or on the calligrapher, Mr. Mustafa. In the corners of the wall in the courtyard of the mosque is a fountain of water above which is a system of poetic construction of the poet Zheni, while the back yard of the mosque contains the graves of some of the known figures in the Palace of the Bab al-'Ali at the time.

When you look at the mosque, it seems to you at first glance that it is a unique palace. In the façade, a number of windows find about 20 small windows and grow closer to the ground. The minaret is separate from the building of the mosque, which is located next to it with a small minaret. There are a number of beautiful trees in the square of the mosque.

The mosque was built to bear the name of the mother Sultan Mihrişah Valide Sultan and the brother of Sultan Sheikh Zadeh Suleiman. It is said that the mosque was taken from the Ayazma sarayı palace located near the mosque.

The mosque was renovated several times and its minaret was rebuilt twice. His watch, his bath and many of his shops have not been mentioned so far.
